The 3 Catholic R's
Sacred Heart of Jesus School is implementing
the “Three Catholic R’s” program this year
in an effort to promote the Catholicity of our school and
to foster a greater cooperation between and among teachers,
parents, and students. The program, initiated in the Archdiocese
of Wichita, places an emphasis on Responsibility,
Reverence,
and Respect in the development of expectations for teachers,
parents, and students of Sacred Heart School.
Sacred Heart School staff members along with a committee
of parents comprised a list of expectations they felt necessary
to ensure a Catholic environment in our school and to maximize
the spiritual and academic growth of our students. These expectations
were agreed upon and then written into covenants that would
be presented to all teachers and parents.
The Teachers
Covenant was presented at a staff meeting prior to the
start of the school year. The conditions of the covenant were
reviewed and the covenant was signed by all teachers. The
Three R’s program was explained to parents at a mandatory
meeting on August 18th. The goals of the program were presented
by Pastor, Fr. Craig Maxim, Principal, Mark Altman, and Parent,
Monica Browne. Conditions of the Parent
Covenant were explained, and it was offered to the parents
for signing.
A retreat day was planned for the 8th graders’
first day of school. During this time Fr. Craig discussed
with them their role as leaders and how they could incorporate
the three R’s into that role. Students were then given
time, individually, to reflect and write down what they feel
should be expectations for all students attending Sacred Heart
School. The 8th graders then convened as a group to compile
their ideas and write them into a covenant for all students.
Once the Student Covenant
was agreed upon the 8th grade class presented it and explained
its expectations to the rest of the student body.
The program will be reviewed at the end of each school year
and input from parents, teachers, and students will be used
to make necessary changes and improvements. The successful
spiritual and academic development of our students depends
on a commitment to cooperation by everyone in the Sacred Heart
School community.
