Laptops Online in Class
- Mrs. Daniels, middle school Science teacher, and
her
students have been using the 23 laptops donated to Sacred Heart
School through the IBM Donor Program. "The students were so
engaged in the research on atomic structure using the laptops
and wireless Internet connection that they finished their
assignment early!
Having the resources [the Web] at the desktop truly enhances
our educational environment. I look forward to completing the
mobile lab, so each student can have his own computer."
Students agree with Mrs. Daniels saying that they feel that
their time using the laptops is more efficient and definitely more fun! Eighth grader Nick Z.
commented that this was his "glimpse into high school" at St.
James Academy and how it might feel to have his own computer
to use during class.
Other classes at Sacred Heart
will also be using the wireless laptop lab very soon!
KanEd Empowered Desktop
- Everyday students are learning more about the research tools
and resources in the
KanEd Empowered Desktop portal. This portal
offers online services and applications to
students like electronic databases and
reference services like WorldBook, SIRS Discoverer, ProQuest,
and Thomas Gale. Also offered through the portal is NeTrekker,
an kid-safe academic search engine for students that are
aligned to state standards and are searchable by readability
level (elementary, middle, high school).
One tool accessed through the
KanEd portal that is grabbing a lot of students and their
families' attention is the FREE online tutoring service
called "Kansas
Homework." Several students have used the online tutor
and been very impressed with the assistance they've received.
Be watching for a demonstration of "Kansas Homework" at a PTO
meeting soon.
Another great free tool
through the portal is the BackPack, a web-based file
management system and that provides Internet storage space for
teachers and students. Don't miss out on the educational
opportunities provided for your student - login to
KanEd
