Hello SHOJ-

I hope the new year is bringing many blessings to you and your families!

It has been a long time since I have sent out a health related message, but, I have some exciting news regarding Project Adam and becoming a heart safe school, that I couldn't wait to share. I have assembled a CERT (cardiac emergency response team) and have put together our CERP (cardiac emergency response plan). The CERT will be meeting in February to do a mock run of a cardiac emergency with Kaitlyn Bennett, RN, BSN, the Project Adam coordinator for Children's Mercy present. After this, our school will be designated as a heart safe school! We will not stop there, we will have continuing education yearly for all staff and the CERT will practice mock runs of cardiac emergencies several times throughout the year. I am so encouraged to know that we will be well prepared and equipped for the unthinkable should it happen here at SHOJ.

On another note, we have seen an increase in illness these last couple of days, which is normal this time of year. Yesterday our numbers were at 20 sick, today it is at 14 sick, which is still less than 10% of our entire school population. It is not any one infection  specifically, but rather a whole host of different infections, such as: flu A, flu B, strep throat, covid, pneumonia and other various infections. It is important to keep your children home when they are ill and until they are symptom free for at least 24 hours without the use of symptom masking medications. Please reach out to me with any questions you have regarding illness.

Thank you,

Nurse Mary
