“Today was good. Today was fun. Tomorrow is another one."- Dr. Seuss. Today was indeed fun as we had some VERY special guests who took time out of their busy day to read to our Cardinals. Thanks be to God for the Shawnee Police Department as well as KSHB’s Sports Director Mick Shaffer who brought lots of enthusiasm to their read aloud with our students.

After our Eucharistic Procession today, we were scheduled to have our bi-weekly Fridays with Father where Father Pat comes to visit classes, but he had a conflict. I told the first-grade teachers, I would take his place fairly confident that I could answer their questions. Boy was I wrong. They had some tough questions such as the following: • why God even made the tree of life that Adam and Eve weren’t supposed to eat from • why would Jesus go into the dessert for 40 days • why do we give up things for Lent and fast from meat • questions about creation and the devil • why is Jesus the key to heaven • why there is candy in eggs at Easter They are big thinkers with good questions. Lent started this week, and the Catholicity Committee asked each class to decide what they would do to Fast, Pray and Give Alms. The students love hearing their class decisions announced on the intercom. The committee thought that it would be fruitful to collect parent responses as well. Please follow the link to share your responses to some general questions about how your family is celebrating Lent so it can be announced on the intercom as well. https://tinyurl.com/bdfaket8 We start Lent with ashes to remind us that we are dust and to dust we shall return. Our sacrifices and generosity over the 40 days of Lent should bring about a conversion in us to grow closer to Jesus and eternal life with Him. Our readings from Mass during this time help us grow in virtue, carry our own crosses, and remind us that Good Friday leads to Easter Sunday. As a I responded to a first-grade question about why God didn’t just “not make the tree” that caused Adam and Eve to sin with the explanation that giving love to God is better when we chose it, rather than when we don’t have a choice. I pray that whatever choice you are making this Lent produces great fruit during the celebration of Easter. Rooted in Christ, Kathy Rhodes

The SHOJ teams did great at the Miege Scholar Bowl. SHOJ White won the competition! The championship game went to a tiebreaker and Madelyn Lyster buzzed with the answer. SHOJ Maroon games were incredibly close with few points separating from the win. Thanks to Coach Melvin!

“Contribute to the needs of the holy ones, exercise hospitality.” Romans 12:13. As our dear Food Service Coordinator recovers from an accident, Middle Schoolers spend time helping in the kitchen. Love it when we live like family!

So much to celebrate this Victory Monday! Thanks to these 5th grade parents for sharing in the Eucharist at All School Mass this morning and staying after to share in conversation and community building.  Worthy of celebration as well is the video posted only to Facebook of one of the LAST times our middle schoolers will tear down the MPC after Mass as we anticipate moving back into the church.

Community is the heart of SHOJ. Many thanks to 4th grade parents who attended All School Mass and stayed for coffee and conversation. It is humbling to see the Books in this pic. They have had at least one Cardinal for the past 20 years. Sacred Heart=Family. We are so blessed!

What is SO ENTIRELY awesome about Sacred Heart?Yesterday afternoon Mrs. Hess approached a group of 8th graders and asked, “Will you show up at 7:35 to hand out Food Drive and Cardinal Carnival information to parents at drop off?”  In the freezing cold, you see their response. We didn’t catch a picture of the other side of the school where another group just as large was gathered.   Thank you, God, your goodness overwhelms!!

Today many of our 8th graders went to Topeka to the annual Ignite Rally. They listened to a keynote speaker, attended Mass and Marched to a rally at the Capitol Building. It was a formational day to be a voice for the voiceless and to defend the dignity of women and motherhood.
