"Play Nice. Win Nice. Lose Nice."
Benedict House did just that on Friday during our "Chicken Baseball" competition. Cheering for each other, cheering for other houses and taking a knee when a player got hurt...they won bonus points and the first ever "Play Nice. Win Nice. Lose Nice." award. Quite a display of sportsmanship!
St. Benedict, pray for us.
“The priesthood is the love of the heart of Jesus. When you see a priest, think of our Lord Jesus Christ.” — St. John Vianney
The Catholic Education Foundation celebrated Archbishop Naumann's dedication to Catholic Education at the annual "Guadeamus" (may we rejoice) fundraiser. Over 3.4 million dollars was raised to help families achieve their dream for a Catholic education for their children.
Sacred Heart staff (and Forever Cardinal Mrs. Cooney) and parents were blessed to share in the joy of the evening.
"Serve the Lord with laughter." Saint Padre Pio
If Don Vergara is your co-worker, you spend a lot of time smiling and laughing. He brings great joy to the workplace.
His 2nd grade families celebrated his birthday with custom made hats and cupcakes. Thanks, 2V, for loving Mr. Vergara in such a special way.
“But may I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.”
Galatians 6:14
Forever Cardinal and Seminarian John Donart visited Sacred Heart today. He shared time in classrooms including time with our 8th graders where he shared the verse from Galatians as his favorite.
It was a gift to hear him reflect on the journey he has been on as he has responded to the call of Christ in his life. Continued prayers as he pursues his vocation.
“The whole earth is a living icon of the face of God.”-St. John of Damascus
Fifth graders are creating Native American shelters. They learned about Native American groups and how they used resources from their region to build shelters. They created blueprints for Mrs. Pendergast to review and approve, and then the building began.
We celebrated the feast of Saint Francis a day early at Sacred Heart School. Our students brought their beloved pets to school to receive a blessing for all the joy that animals bring to our lives.
“It is not enough to love the young; they must know that they are loved' - St John Bosco
Eighth-grade homeroom and middle school writing teacher Mrs. Jessica Jones instructs her students on more than grammar. She has a way of building confidence so they find their voice as writers. How does she do it? She listens to them, loves them, and supports them beyond the classroom.
When these students were in 8th grade, she would attend their sporting events. Now two of the students, Frankie Menghini-8 and Alec Jett-88, are "Fab Bros Detailing. Mrs. Jones is still supporting them as a loving former teacher AND satisfied customer.
As 2nd grade teacher, Mrs. Kelly Russell completes her 37th round of Parent Teacher Conferences, we just had to share the feedback her students shared about her.
How is Mrs. Russell doing so far this year?
Zoey- She is doing good on her new Smartboard.
Marielle- She is good at teaching us science.
Vivian- She is good at making a boring subject like science fun and she is nice to us if we mess up on it.
Evie-She is patient.
Zadie- She is good at checking her work.
Liam- She takes us to Mass on Wednesday morning.
Sam and Oliver shared that she is loving and kind.
She has the love and patience of a first-year teacher- even in her thirty-seventh year. What an inspiration. We are grateful for you, Mrs. Russell

"What really matters in life is being loved by Christ and loving him in return."- Saint John Paul II
As we interviewed 2nd-5th graders, the first question with each group was, "What do teachers talk with parents about during conferences?" Every single grade first responded, "How we act at school." Academics were never their first response. I think John Paul II would have loved SHOJ. Our life in Christ is the foundation for learning. Kudos to the focus on the foundation being built in Mrs. Caton's 4th grade class.
Tell me about your teacher, 4C:
Vincent- She makes us feel special when we are down low. She shares her personal experiences to show she understands us.
Madelyn- She explains the virtues.
Carinn, Evelyn, and Dustin shared her strengths in teaching reading, math, and religion.
Levi noted how organized she is.
Brenna, Olivia, and Piper said that she cares about them and is kind to them.
Macartney shared that Mrs. Caton knows God and shares Him with the class.
If I had a mic, I'd drop it.
St. Thomas Aquinas writes that humility means, "...seeing ourselves as God sees us: knowing every good we have comes from Him as pure gift."
As we approach Parent/Teacher conferences, we continue to check in on our teachers by asking their students for feedback. What are the "pure gifts" our teachers have received from God?
So, Students, how is Mrs. Lyons doing?
Dempsey- She is doing a good job teaching math because she’s nice and doesn’t mad when you get the answer wrong.
Ivy- She is doing good teaching reading.
Michael- She is good at math groups and gives time to work and ask questions.
If you could give Mrs. Lyons' parents feedback on how she's doing, what would you tell them?
Marin- She does a good job teaching.
Myah- She went to school to learn how to be a good teacher.
John Paul- I'd tell them she has the virtue of foresight. She plans ahead and puts stuff on the board so we know what we are going to do next.
How do you know she's a Catholic School teacher?
Olivia- She's always really nice.
I imagine Saint Thomas Aquinas would be giving Mrs. Lyons an A+ for the way she uses her gifts.
Parent teacher conferences are 48 hours away.
If Mrs. Novak’s mom and dad came to a conference led by her STUDENTS, this is the feedback they have for her so far this year.
Q: What are some of Mrs. Novak’s strengths?
Matthew- She takes
us to recess.
Danielle- She makes sure we all behave well.
Ella- She is good at math and helps us learn new things.
Dylan- She has the virtue of self-control when she tells the students to calm down.
Q: What are some of the reasons Mrs. Novak’s parents should be proud of her?
Zoey- Her parents should be proud of her because she is kind and generous.
Wyatt- She teaches smaller kids well.
Beth- She takes care of us.
Sounds like Mrs. Novak's parents need to take her out for ice cream after conferences.
Thanks, Mrs. Novak. You're a gem!

As we get ready for parent teacher conferences, we thought it would be fair to ask the STUDENTS how their teacher is doing. Here is some feedback for Mr. Whalen, 5th Grade Teacher
Isaac- When people get something wrong he helps them.
Sofie-In religion, he reads from HIS Bible instead of the textbook.
Alivia-He doesn’t get upset that you don’t get your homework done, he just wants you to learn.
Chiara- He does lots of labs to make learning fun.
Ollie- He prays before every class.
Olivia- He is easy to ask questions of.
Ruby- He shares how God has changed his life.
"Our parting will not be for long; we shall see each other again in Heaven." -St. Gonzaga

Libby Davis of The Cooper Davis Memorial Foundation https://cooperdavismemorialfoundation.org/ spoke with our middle school students today. The students were locked in as they learned of the overwhelming danger of illicit fentanyl and fake pills. You could hear a pin drop. We are grateful for the awareness brought by the "Keepin' It Clean For Coop."
